The dean then began the service in English, as befitted the funeral’s Protestant nature. The mourners, including Katherine, knelt on a cushion and a carpet before the altar, before two assistants made their way to the hearse and led Katherine away by the arm, with her train being carried by some of the other mourners.68 Following the offering, Jewel delivered his sermon, after which the dean proceeded to communion, at which Katherine and Mary participated.69 After the funeral, those present departed for the duchess’ residence of the Charterhouse in a chariot.70 The inscription on Frances’ grave reads (in Latin):

Nor grace, nor splendour, nor a royal name,

Nor widespread fame can aught avail;

All, all have vanished here.

True worth alone Survives the funeral pyre and silent tomb
